Open Source Software is a valuable resource for any business offering lower cost development of business applications. Many large service providers now see the benefits of open source products and aim to make their money by selling their services to configure and install the products.
Open Source, by definition, makes the source code available to be changed by anybody who accepts the open source usage licence that goes with the product. Source code are the text statements that can be edited in a text editor and are converted by the web server into object code that can ony be understood by a machine. This is also called machine code.
Open Source has one drawback in that the ordinary business user can never be sure how mature and reliable the product really is or whether the developer is in it for the long run. KPR i-Services has that expertise and we have evaluated and put into production all the products we use for our customers. We have rejected many well-marketed offerings as they have failed our real-life tests for reliability and support or don't have a long-term future.
Open source software can make projects cheaper by up to 20-30% but those initial savings can be easily lost by trying to make a poorly designed product work in a commercial environment. |
